Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 8, 2026
IG Search ("the Extension") is a Chrome browser extension that lets you search through posts on Instagram profiles by caption text. This privacy policy explains what data the Extension accesses, how it is stored, and your rights regarding that data.
Data we collect
The Extension collects the following data from Instagram pages you visit while using it:
- Post metadata — captions, thumbnails, shortcodes, timestamps, and whether a post is pinned or a video
- Profile metadata — usernames and profile pictures of profiles you choose to load
This data is collected only when you explicitly click the "Load Posts" button on a profile page. The Extension does not collect data in the background or on pages you do not interact with.
How data is stored
All data is stored locally on your device using your browser's built-in storage (chrome.storage.local). No data is ever transmitted to any external server, database, or third-party service.
How data is used
The collected data is used solely to power the Extension's search functionality — allowing you to search through post captions, view thumbnails, and navigate to posts on Instagram. The data is not used for any other purpose.
Network interception
The Extension intercepts network requests made by Instagram's website (specifically, GraphQL and API responses) in order to capture post data as it loads. This interception happens entirely within your browser and is necessary for the Extension's core functionality. No intercepted data is transmitted externally.
Third-party sharing
We do not collect, transmit, sell, or share any user data with any third party. There are no analytics, tracking scripts, or external services of any kind.
Data retention and deletion
Data is retained locally until you choose to delete it. You can delete data at any time using the Extension's built-in controls:
- Clear a single profile — open the profile's detail view and click "Clear profile data"
- Clear all data — go to the all-profiles view and click "Clear all data"
- Uninstall the Extension — removing the Extension from Chrome automatically deletes all stored data
Permissions
The Extension requests the following browser permissions:
- storage — to save post data locally on your device
- activeTab — to interact with the Instagram tab you are currently viewing
- Host access to instagram.com — to inject the search panel and capture post data on Instagram pages
Children's privacy
The Extension is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
